LUC Juniors Take Gold at Brentwood Regatta
April 27, 2008

Lake Union Crew had it's best Brentwood Regatta ever this weekend as 27 athletes represented LUC in 17 events. 10 crews moved on to the finals, taking 1st place in 8 heats.

In the finals, the LUC Junior girls dominated the sculling events taking gold in the Varsity A 1x, Varsity A 2x, Varsity B 2x (B = less than 16 years old), and Varsity A 4x+.

The Girls A JV 2x took third, missing out on 2nd by less than 1 second.

Likewise, the Boys A Lightweight 4+ came in 3rd, finishing less than 2 seconds behind the winner.

Congratulations to all on a great weekend!  Special congratulations to Emma Framson, Cara Linnenkohl, Ailish O'Sullivan, and Kyle Wunderlin, who won every event they were in this weekend.  Way to go girls!!

LUC Brings Home San Diego Gold
April 6, 2008

The 2008 San Diego Crew Classic was record setting for Lake Union Crew and Holy Names Academy in more ways than one.

Nearly 80 teammates made the trek this year, fielding entries in the Junior Men’s Varsity 8+, Junior Women’s Varsity 8+, Junior Women’s JV 8+, Men’s Open 8+, Women’s Open 8+, Men’s Club 8+, Women’s Club 8+, Men’s Masters A, Women’s Masters A. Men’s Masters B, Women’s Masters B, and the Women’s Masters D.

LUC SDCC 2008

LUC Captured Gold in 3 Events

First was the Men’s Masters A. Defending their 2007 title, the men considered Trident to be the main competition, as they are a group of former elite oarsmen. Undaunted, LUC walked through the leaders at the 750 meter mark, lengthened that lead throughout the race, and cruised to a comfortable open-water victory.

The Women’s Masters B race followed. LUC has won this race several times, but did not take it in 2007 so were eager to regain the title. At one point in 4th place, we doggedly hung on, reeling in the leaders. Still 4 seats down at the last 500, coxswain Heather Dow called for an early sprint, predicting a photo finish. The rowers heard that call, dug in, and began to walk, seat by seat… and when the horn sounded, LUC was the champion by a half a second! Heather, how did you know it would be a photo finish!?!?! Well done!

LUC’s last race of the day was the Women’s Masters D. In years past we’ve come within less than 1 second of winning, but never triumphed in this category at SDCC. This year was different however, as our LUC women took the lead from the start and never relinquished it. It took another nail-biting photo finish, in which the announcers preliminarily predicted victory for the opposition, but after review, LUC came out on top by .31 seconds.

Congratulations to all on a wonderful weekend, and many, many thanks to our coaches and staff that make it all possible. Next stop, Regionals!!

Seattle Clubs and Rowers Swing Into Action To Help Vancouver Lake Crew
January 19, 2008

In typcially generous and quick form, local rowers donated boats and equipment to tornado-struck Vancouver Lake Crew. Transportation of the donated boats by trailer was coordinated by Lake Union Crew volunteers and delivered on Saturday, January 19, 2008, to a joyful group of about 60 VLC juniors and parents.

Thanks to all in our community who responded so quickly to keep the Vancouver kids on the water. Well done, everybody!

The media picked up the story - below are a number of links to the coverage.

LUC Hosts Trivia Night
November 2, 2007

LUC's Social Committee was back at it, hosting trivia night for all members. Team "Rowers Do It In The Morning" ousted second place challengers "Stuff In a Cup" taking home the top prize of half the kitty. However, Stuff In A Cup shone in the lightning round, taking home $5 Starbucks gift cards.

In addition to hosting a great evening (loved music sound-bite category guys!) Triva Chairs Mitch Cherry and Heidi Plzak also polled the group for ideas for upcoming social committee events.

Thanks Mitch and Heidi for a wholelottafun!

LUC Juniors Medal at USRowing NW Regionals
May 20, 2007

Junior Regional's was a great success for us this past weekend.  We almost made it the entire weekend without any delays but the wind and rain decided to come on Sunday, canceling all races after 9:30am.  While this only effected one of our racers we were fortunate that the races did not get canceled until after the varsity 1x events.  In the men's varsity 1x, Mike Kohn made LUC history by becoming the first person to qualify for the youth national championships as well as being the first to medal at Junior Regionals in a varsity event.  Even more impressive, Mike is a lightweight rower and qualified in an open-weight event. Well done, Mike!

In other historic events for us this past weekend, Alexa and Rebekah who won their Women's Novice 2x event, had the fastest time out of all three heats and consequently brought home the trophy which is our first trophy from Junior regional's and only the second first place trophy at a major regatta in our history.  The first time was at Brentwood in 2005 when the Women's Jr. A Novice 4x+ won in convincing fashion.

Our other medal winners from this weekend were Kyle Wunderlin and Sarah Kroll in their timed final of the Women's Novice 2x.

Congratulations everyone once again on a fantastic weekend.  We hope that your rower had a lot of fun and has come back with great memories and experiences.  We hope to see lots of them in the summer and everyone back in the fall.

We would like to wish a special thank you to our seniors, Mattie, Sara, Alain and Tessa.  They have all brought so much to this program and thank them very much for every thing they have done for us.  They all have bright futures ahead of themselves and we wish them the best of luck in school and rowing in college.

May 5, 2007

Lake Union Crew’s Women's 8+ (30+) took first place at the 2007 Windermere Cup Opening Day regatta, beating out Cascade in 2nd and Green Lake in 3rd. Lake Washington was disqualified for fielding two rowers under the minimum age requirement.

Congratulations women, and to all our boats that raced in this one-of-a-kind rowing spectacle (as Bob Ernst would say). Well done!

LUC Men Take Gold in San Diego Crew Classic!
April 1, 2007

Lake Union Crew’s Men's Master A 8+ took first place at this year's San Diego Crew Classic, beating out 2nd place Kent Mitchell by 3.35 seconds and 3rd place Pocock by 9.9 seconds. Strokes in color
April 7, 2006

Lake Union Crew held a very special event on the evening of April 7, 2006; an Opening by artist and rower Perry Estevenin.

Perry is known in Seattle’s art scene as an accomplished painter working mainly in abstract oils. A former UW rower, Perry remains a dedicated athlete with a competitive edge. He has combined his two passions to bring a series of rowing themed works to life in a show titled “Strokes in color”.
