Green Lake Frostbite Race Recap

The conditions at Greenlake in November can be uncomfortable, with strong winds and rain making for harsh racing conditions. Instead, this year the water was flat with almost no wind and surprising warming sunshine. Both Sweep and Scull classes plus the AM-Advanced Sweep and Scull class had entries for races in this last sprint race of the year.  For many it was their first racing experience.  Categories with LUC entries were Womens Masters 4x-, Womens Intermediate 8+, Mens Masters 2x, Womens Masters 4+, Womens Masters 2x, Mens Intermediate 8+, Mixed Masters 8+ and Mixed Masters 2x. All crews competed hard and gained a lot of racing experience, preparing them for next year's sprint season.

Never work together with someone of your family? While this might hold true in much of life, it doesn’t count for rowing at LUC! Mary Lovell competed with her daughter Sarah Lovell in the Womens Masters 2x and finished with a time of 4:32.62. Jennifer Murrow rowed a double with her husband Hugh Tompkins.  The two of them finished the 1,000 m course in 4:14.55. They both enjoyed the race and are still happily married!

Both LUC’s junior team and Holy Names Academy’s rowing team competed successfully in a variety of categories including fours, quads and eights, making this a successful day for both Lake Union Crew and Holy Names Academy!  Every LUC Juniors Novice boat placed within the top 3, bringing home ribbons for their successes!

Congratulations to all participants!

Head of the Gorge and Head of the Elk Race Recap

With the festive atmosphere and uniquely challenging features, the Head of the Gorge and Head of the Elk races have secured a favorite place in the hearts of many LUC rowers.  Head of the Gorge, weaving its 5km course from downtown Victoria through the notorious narrows to the Craigflower Launch is fun for its costumed participants and for what is often a trepidatious passage through the narrows, a point in the course where tidal currents can be keenly felt and must be passed - against the current - one boat at a time on the way out to the start line.  This year we were surprised, however, both by the gorgeous partly sunny and mild weather and a mellow tidal pattern.  Nevertheless, directing a delicate shell essentially head-on toward a concrete wall leaves little room for error and will put the nerves of even the more seasoned coxswains and bow-persons to the test.  All six of LUCs entrants pushed hard for this race, and LUC’s Women’s Masters 4X finished an impressive second out of sixteen in their category (!) on Saturday while LUC Coach Stephen Souvall placed second in the Mens 1X.

Women's Masters 8+ Event: Four LUC crews representing three programs (Nationally Competitive, Locally Competitive, and PM ASS) competed in this race:

6th with a time of 15:38.7 (Susanna Hurley, Guylaine Lalonde, Lisa Tschannen, Christine Luscombe, Caroline Saouma, Emelie East, Betsy Price, Aimee Quiggle coxed by Tom Boedeker)

8th with a time of 15:02.8 (Laurie Leak, Michelle Leco, Julie Metzger, Adele Rudolph, Amy Payne, Sheila Williamson, Martha Fitzpatrick. Meg Angell coxed by Nancy Balin)

9th with a time of 16:37.9 (Courtney Price, Natasha Dunn, Katie DeNiro, Susan Esaylan, Sara Krizan, Breena Roos, Heather Milt, Rebecca Selkregg with coxswain Sara Mickelberry)

10th with a time of 17:20.5 (Deborah Bosket, Julie Hodapp, Svetlana Betz, Audra Jackley, Elizabeth Adams, Evanna Sweeney, Natalie Tobey, Nicole Rodriguez with coxswain Andy Bracken)

Congratulations to all these crews.

Women's Masters 4x: LUC was represented by a quad from the Nationally Competitive program.

2nd in a field of 16 entries with a time of 16:11.8 (Kathy Roach, Terri O'Sullivan, Roberta Scholz, Laura DelVillar). Congratulations ladies!!

Men's Open/Varsity 1x: Coach Stephen Souvall finished 2nd in a field of 9 competitors with a time of 17:18.1. Well done!

The next day we return to the water, this time for the seasons longest 8km Head of the Elk race.  Though we were again graced by beautiful weather, low water levels in Elk and Beaver lakes inspired emphatic instructions regarding paying heed to the green buoys outlining the course to avoid hitting submerged tree stumps near the shoreline.  Tom Boedecker, cox for LUC’s Nat Comp Women’s Masters 8+, found himself not only negotiating the shore early on in the race, but two other eights as he split right between them on a turn.  The length of this race, in addition to its several seemingly continuous and at times sharp turns, would be downright brutal, but for the gorgeous surroundings and drive to compete.  Again – LUC’s Women’s Masters 4X placed, this time coming in first against seven others in their category; bow seat Roberta Sholz says her teammates were very responsive and gave everything she asked of them – and perhaps most importantly in this race – really hauled on those turns!!

The same crews that rowed for LUC at the Gorge rowed again on Sunday in Head of the Elk. Congratulations to all of these competitors for a job well done in a very long race.

Women's Masters 8+

Tom Boedeker's 8+ finished 5th with a time of 26:41.6. Congratulations ladies on improving your final standing from Saturday's race!

Nancy Balin's 8+ finished 8th with a time of 27:44.9.

Sara Mickelberry's 8+ finished 9th with a time of 29:05.7.

Andy Bracken's 8+ finished 10th with a time of 30:07.9.

Women's Masters 4x:

A first place finish with a time of 27:56.8 was the prize for this quad in Sunday's 8k race. WELL DONE LADIES!!

Men's Open/Varsity 1x:

Stephen Souvall competed in this event with 11 other competitors, finishing 5th with a time of 29:55.9. Congratulations Stephen!

Head of the Charles Race Recap

A rainy week leading in made for a bit of a mud-pit along the banks of the Charles this past weekend, but thankfully the skies were sunny and water calm for the two-days and 56 events comprising the world’s largest regatta.  With fellow participants including former Olympians and those from the nation’s top rowing Universities, placing in the top ten is a major accomplishment and LUC represented spectacularly!

Tiffany Thompson, Erica Finsness, Leslie Lorenz, Chantal Stettinius, and their cox Jenn Gile came in 6th out of 45 crews in the Club Women’s four with a time of 20:17.19.  They even improved LUC’s already great result from last year by one position!

Leslie Mittendorf considered rowing the Charles only one time to be too easy:  She raced on Saturday morning in the Women’s Senior Masters single, coming in 7th out of 28 with a time of 21:52.21, only to get right back into a double with her partner Max Chickering (PRC) to race in the afternoon to a great 6th place out of 25 boats (19:23.25)!

Kathleen Sabo and Lori Schwefel raced in the Women’s Senior Masters double and finished 13th out of 21 competing crews after 23:30.89 minutes.

Sarah Lovell came in 11th out of 37 (22:52.15) in the Women’s Club 1x and Jill Gardner 2nd out of 15 (23:40.14) in the Women’s Veteran 1x!

Coaches Alex Twist and Elizabeth Robinson both competed in the lightweight singles categories and came in 7th out of 28 (19:08.10) and 5th out of 23 (21:02.84), respectively.

Not only LUC’s masters rowers were successful, but also the LUC Juniors finished with a great result: Angus Rush, Kieran O’Sullivan, Mikhail Zogorski and Arend Sopher with their cox Emmi Nordale placed 6th out of 77 competing boats (!) in the Mens Youth fours category! They finished with a time of 17:17.61.

In addition to the challenges posed by its fierce competition and three-mile length, the Head of the Charles’ course poses challenges for those negotiating its several curves and bridges.  Perhaps most challenging comes at the Elliot Street bridge, the last on the course and following its most severe river curve; spectators watching from the bridge tell us it was at times a clash of oars as the boats passed beneath, fighting to gain or maintain positions going in to the final leg of the race.  Yet we are left to assume, however, that our own coxswains not only passed those watery challenges unscathed but in fact with ease and style because it is reported that some of our boats captains were mistaken for hometown Bostonians!  Way to guide ‘em, LUC!

Congratulations to everyone who raced in Boston!
