Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this class for beginners?
A: Yes. Learn to Row is for those who have never touched an oar in their lives as well as anyone who has rowed before and would like to get back in a boat.

Q: Am I fit enough / tall enough / too old / too heavy / too… to row?
A:. If you have a desire to learn, we have the desire to teach you. The great thing about rowing is anyone can do it. No matter whether you are 5’2 or 6’4, have rowed before or have never heard of the sport before now, our Learn To Row program can accommodate you.  Our boats can hold individuals up to 285 lbs and any height.

Q: What kind of workout will I get?
A: Rowing is a full body workout, focusing on the legs and core. The first few classes focus on learning proper technique - then it's up to you how much of a workout you get.

Q: I already kayak / canoe / whitewater raft, etc. Can I skip this class and go right into one of the rowing programs?
A: While your on-water experiences will help with your balance and boat sense, rowing is completely different; the technique and equipment is unique. Learn to Row is important for that reason.

Q: What do I need to wear/bring to class?
A: You shouldn't have to purchase anything special to participate in Learn to Row. The first two classes are land-based and once on the water, dress weather-appropriate as if you were going for a jog or brisk walk:

  • Man-made layers of cool-max, polypropylene or fleece
  • Clothes that are not baggy or they will get caught in the equipment.
  • Old athletic shoes and wool socks
  • In warm weather, hats and sunscreen are advised.
  • Gloves are not recommended for rowing.

Q: How much time is spent on the water?
A: Of the 12 classes, 10 of them are on-water training, weather permitting.

Q: What are my chances of ending up in the water?
A: It is our goal to always be ‘on’ the water and not ‘in’ the water. That said, rowing is a water sport and occasionally rowers end up in the water. Our coaches are equipped to handle these situations quickly and safely.

Q: What happens if I need to miss a class?
A: The first THREE classes of any session are MANDATORY.  If you need to miss a class after those three, please speak with your coach.
