Sweep and Scull Programs

The sweep and scull program is split into two levels, beginning and advanced. Members have the flexibility of attending morning or evening classes and are encouraged to attend as many classes as fit their life style, skill level, and goals.

Rowing objectives

  • Work on technical skills and endurance levels
  • Gain fitness benefits from rowing
  • Increase comfort and skill levels in both sweep and sculling boats
  • Understand boat rhythm and balance
  • Enjoy the beauty, challenge, and community of rowing

There is no exact science for moving from beginning to advanced sweep and scull. Progress in rowing is not linear and we believe in supporting your interests and goals and having fun along the way. If you are interested in moving up, it is best to communicate with the coaches of both programs.

Rowers are usually invited by coaching staff to join the locally competitive program and members are highly encouraged to let a coach know if they are interested in becoming part of this team.

LUC is committed to the integrity of this level of competition and the expectations of the rowers are high. They compete in national and international regattas, including San Diego Crew Classic, Head of the Charles, and Master’s Worlds, at which the team has medaled consistently throughout the years.  Practices and workouts are designed using a yearly training plan focusing on specific regattas.  A coaching philosophy of “any seat, any day, any race” is used to build a team that is versatile and is able to match, blend and win.

Rowing Objectives

  • Consistent attendance
  • Minimum of 300 minutes of additional aerobic work and cross training per week
  • Increase boat speed and skills to be within medal performance range
